Feral Cats
The Healdsburg Animal Shelter has joined Forgotten Felines of
Sonoma County and Feline Rescue of Northern California to amplify
feral cat services in our community. Need a 'mouser' or barn cat?
We sometimes have spayed/neutered, vaccinated and microchipped
ferals available for adoption. Adoption fee is $15.
For more information about our feral cat program or to donate,
please call the shelter at (707) 431-3386.
Feral cats shun human contact, live a shadow existence, and
reproduce, thereby increasing their numbers. With the support of
information and equipment from Forgotten Felines and Feline Rescue,
HAS now employs these alternatives when dealing with feral cats: We
follow the trap, neuter, return and maintain protocol. In other
words, people who feed feral cats agree to catch them in a humane
trap, have them spayed or neutered, then return them to their
original colony. If the trapper does not want the feral cat
returned, HAS assumes responsibility for the spaying/neutering and
if possible, places the cats at an appropriate relocation site.
To make the program successful HAS needs vineyard, farm, and
rural property owners to partner with us by accepting the feral
cats. The fixed cats will be tested for disease, ear-tipped, and
vaccinated. The property owner's responsibility would be to provide
food and water. In return, they will have a cat that will keep
rodents under control. The need for relocation venues always
exceeds the number of available cats. Even if you are unable to
take one of the cats, please consider making a donation to help us
in our endeavor to control the feral cat population in
Healdsburg.
