The Healdsburg Animal Shelter is a private 501(c)(3) public benefit corporation. It is not a public agency and is not subject to the Brown Act which requires public meetings, unlike the City Council, which is a public entity and subject to the public meeting laws.  There are many things that are discussed at meetings that are confidential: names of prospective donors and strategies for approaching them; dealings with contracts, negotiations and pricing as well as potential disputes with contractors.  There are budget items and personnel issues that the board needs to address, just to name a few.

Starting in 2012, in keeping with general accepted standards of business conduct for non-profit corporations and in our ongoing attempt to move towards greater efficiency and professionalism, our board meetings will be closed to the public.  The Shelter intends to use its website to keep the public informed about the status of the shelter, including construction, new programs, fundraising events, etc.  Any questions may be submitted to questions@healdsburgshelter.org, and will be responded to accordingly.
